Arab governments celebrates the International Day for Press Freedom

by prosecuting the newspapers and journalists

At a time when the world celebrates the International Day for Press Freedom on 3 May of each year, we find that the Arab authorities celebrate the occasion in their own way.

In Bahrain, Bahraini authorities continue to widen its restrictions against all web sites and veil it from citizens. Meantime, they imposed tight fence around all the outlets of expression and freedom of opinion whether within or outside Bahrain. In addition, Bahraini authority called off the news web site" Horizons", the blog "Bahraini Women" which is interested in women's rights, and a blog named "Bahraini Blog ", as well as the blog of " Bahrain Center for Human Rights ". They also averted the web site "The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information" in addition to other sites.

As for Yemen, the security forces besiege since Sunday 3/5, the headquarters of the newspaper "Al Ayam" with armed vehicles without any reasonable grounds or motives declared by the security services. It worth to be noted, one of the newspaper's vehicles had been cut off by road and 7500 copies of the newspaper had been seized and burned.

In Palestine, the journalist Mr. Mustafa Sabry is still detained for more than two weeks by the Preventive Security Services in the West Bank with no possibility to visit his family.

On this context, The Arab Program for Human Rights condemns these repressive approaches against journalists in Arab countries. Meanwhile, the Program denounces the unjustified siege against the freedom of the press as well as the freedom of opinion and expression. Furthermore, it violates Article 19 of each of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on civil and political rights which asserts on the freedom of opinion and expression. The Article also stresses on the need to practice and enjoy freedom and democracy without restrictions.

Moreover, The Program believes that the repressive acts against the freedom of opinion and expression as well as against the press and journalists underscore that the Arab Authorities have no intentions to implement a serious change and reform policy.

However, The Arab Program claims the Bahraini authorities to call off the decision of the Ministry of information to withhold a number of news web sites and the sites of some human rights organizations.

The Program also calls upon the Yemeni authorities to lift the blockade on the headquarters of "Al-Ayam" newspaper and to run an urgent investigation with the responsible officials regardless of their positions and their importance.

The Arab Program also appeals to the Palestinian authorities to set the journalist Mustafa Sabry free and to provide him the suitable health care.
